Joint Press ReleaseFreetown, 4th August 2021 - The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization, (WHO), welcome the milestone reached by the Government of Sierra Leone to adopt the Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (BMS) Act 2021. By adopting this Act, Sierra Leone joins the other 136 countries with legal instruments to guide the prohibition of aggressive and unethical marketing of breastmilk substitutes, feeding bottles and teats and thereby protect and promote the practice of breastfeeding in the country.   The Act regulates the marketing and distribution of breastmilk substitutes and ensures that mothers and families receive accurate and unbiased information about the healthiest way to feed their infants and young children— free of commercial influence and interest. “Aligning the Breast Milk Substitute Act 2021 to the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 1981 is a major milestone and a commendable show of commitment by Sierra Leone”, said Dr Steven Shongwe, WHO Representative in Sierra Leone. “We will continue to work with the national authorities, the civil society and the media for the general public to fully appreciate the new Act in order for it to achieve...

Qatar Airways says regulator grounds 13 of its Airbus A350s over surface issue

DUBAI (Reuters) - Qatar Airways said on Thursday it has grounded 13 of its Airbus A350 jets at the instruction of Qatar's aviation regulator due to the surface below the paint deteriorating faster than expected. The state-owned carrier has fallen out with the European planemaker over the dispute, having said earlier this year it would not take A350 deliveries until the problem was fixed. "With this latest development, we sincerely expect that Airbus treats this matter with the proper attention that it requires," Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said in a statement. Qatar Airways grounds 13 Airbus A350s as fuselage degrading

0
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Qatar Airways said Thursday it grounded 13 Airbus A350s over what it described as fuselages “degrading at an accelerated rate” in the long-range aircraft, further escalating a monthslong dispute with the European airplane maker over the issue. While Airbus declined to specifically discuss the announcement, Qatar Airways' announcement to journalists raised questions about the A350s' carbon composite fuselage, designed to make the twin-aisle aircraft lighter and cheaper to operate by burning less jet fuel. Qatar Airways also is one of the world's top operators of the aircraft. In its statement, Qatar Airways said it had been monitoring the degradation beneath the paint on the fuselage of the aircraft for some time. It described the issue as a “significant condition,” without elaborating. “Following the explicit written instruction of its regulator, 13 aircraft have now been grounded, effectively removing them from service until such time as the root cause can be established and a satisfactory solution made available to permanently correct the underlying condition,” the airline said in its statement. Qatar Airways has a fleet of 53 Airbus A350s in both its 1000 and 900 series. The...
