Nigeria defeats Cameroon 2-0 to advance to AFCON quarter-finals

In a thrilling encounter, Nigeria secured a 2-0 victory over Cameroon in the round of 16 clash of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, advancing to the quarter-finals.

Ademola Lookman emerged as the hero, scoring both goals with assists from Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi.

The early moments of the game saw Semi Ajayi’s effort ruled out after a VAR review determined he was in an offside position. Undeterred, the Super Eagles continued their offensive efforts, and in the 36th minute, Victor Osimhen made an unselfish pass to Ademola Lookman, who capitalized on the opportunity to open the scoring by shooting under goalkeeper Ondoa.

Throughout the match, both teams had opportunities to add to the scoreline, but it was in the final minute of regulation time that the Super Eagles sealed their victory. Alex Iwobi delivered a precise square pass to Ademola Lookman, who secured his brace and doubled Nigeria’s lead against a struggling Cameroon team.

With a 2-0 triumph, Nigeria advances to the quarter-finals of the AFCON, where they are set to face Angola in the ongoing tournament in Cote d’Ivoire. The Super Eagles’ impressive performance against arch-rivals Cameroon showcases their determination and skill as they aim for a 4th title success in the prestigious continental competition. The Super Eagles last won the Africa Cup of Nations title in 2013.
