The University of Birmingham Dubai will be running an online PE and Youth Sport masterclass to support the new MSc Sports Science programme, starting in September 2021. Dr Victoria Goodyear will be running the workshop on Tuesday, 18May, introducing the programme and encouraging new ways of thinking about PE and Youth Sport and the PE Teacher/Sport Coach in this digital age.

The proliferation of digital technologies and social media platforms, and the generation of vast amounts of easily accessible online physical activity instruction, present a real challenge to how PE and Youth Sport in young people’s lives is conceptualised. It is widely acknowledged that ‘traditional’ practices fail to meet the needs of many youths; therefore, PE and Youth Sport needs to be reimagined in this digital era to address some of these challenges.

Participants will discuss how contemporary youth learn, how the design, organisation and delivery of PE and Youth Sport could be adapted to take advantage of digital affordances, and how initial training and CPD could change to better prepare professional practitioners to operate effectively in a digital age.

The University of Birmingham Dubai will be offering an MSc in Physical Education and Wellbeing and an MSc in Sports Coaching from September 2021 to address the particular existing needs and knowledge gaps in the field across the region.
