Outdoor dining and shisha banned during Ramadan fasting hours in Dubai

As the holy month of Ramadan has begun and with many Muslims fasting during this time, a new rule has been issued to the restaurants of Dubai.

Dubai Economy has announced that though permission to keep the restaurant is allowed during the daytime, outdoor dining areas, however, remain banned during the fasting hours.

Earlier Dubai Economy had announced that restaurants don’t need a special permit to serve food during the fasting hours in Ramadan this year. The authorities also left the decision on the restaurants whether or not to keep dining areas covered from public view, a move welcomed by the hospitality sector.

However, due to this announcement, restaurants were left confused regarding the outdoor seating during the fasting hours, as many restaurants in the region have outdoor terrace seating and also beach dining setups. Thus, questions were raised if they were allowed to serve food in these open spaces during fasting hours in Ramadan.

Due to this confusion, Senior officials at Dubai Economy and Dubai Municipality have clarified that outdoor dining areas of the eateries continue to be banned during fasting hours in Ramadan and that seating inside can continue if the eateries wanted to.

Mohammed Ali Rashed Lootah, CEO of the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection (CCCP) sector in Dubai Economy shared that delivery of food can continue as usual.

Talking about the restaurants at beaches head of Food Inspection at the Food Safety Department in Dubai Municipality Sultan Ali Al Taher said that dining on private beaches inside the premises of the hotels is allowed.

Apart from that, serving Shisha has also been banned during the daytime in Ramadan. Clarifying further, he said that serving shisha outside or even inside restaurants won’t be allowed. As per the municipality’s Ramadan rule in Dubai eateries, Shisha can be served only after iftar and until 4 am and the last order for the day can be taken only till 3 am.
