DUBAI, 13 November 2021 – Mexico’s La Sonora Santanera orchestra enraptured visitors at Expo 2020 Dubai yesterday (12 November) with tropical music combining the rhythms of the mambo and cha-cha-cha during their performance at Dubai Millennium Amphitheatre
The 12-member band – which combines trumpets, bass, piano, percussion and four principal voices – dedicated their concert to the Mexican diaspora in the UAE and around the world.
Arturo Ortiz, Director and band member, said: “We want to say to the Mexican community to never forget Mexico and represent Mexico very proudly. We are more than happy with our performance at Expo 2020. We feel great. We want to thank the whole Mexican community here and everyone who came from different countries to be here.”
Since its founding in 1955, the dynamic band established their signature tropical sound and count a Latin Grammy for Best Traditional Tropical Album (2014) among numerous awards, earning them a spot on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars.
La Sonora Santanera credit their global success to simple yet meaningful lyrics, adding that their music has been able to connect people from all over the world.
Ortiz said: “Music is an art, and is a way to be in contact with a lot of people. No matter what, if you are from Mexico or you are from Dubai, music is the touch, the contact between people.”
The performance was organised by the Mexico Pavilion, which is located in the Mobility District, which features Mexican flowers and monarch butterflies throughout to take visitors on a journey of rooting and mobility, migration, exchange and strength throughout the cycle of life.
