The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah honored 37 male and female students who won the ninth edition of the Sharjah Sustainability Award – the green schools and universities categories – 22 of them in the schools category and 15 in the universities category, during a virtual ceremony, organized in accordance with safety and prevention measures, and in the interest of the health and safety of all .
123 public and private schools participated in the schools category, especially from all the emirates of the country and their regions. Most of the students’ participation focused on the areas of environmental innovation, artificial intelligence, creative writing of the short story, the sustainable environmental project, the green school and the production of an environmental short film. In the universities category, 257 male and female students from various faculties and specializations from universities in the Emirate of Sharjah participated only.
Hana Saif Al-Suwaidi, President of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority, said in a speech during the ceremony: The award aims to consolidate the principles of sustainable development in the educational sector, activate the role and importance of environmental education in working towards achieving sustainable development goals in the educational sector, and to generalize and consolidate the concept of environmental culture among sectors. various students in schools and universities, and enhance a sense of social environmental responsibility, by assigning a key role to students in implementing the award project, and activating the various efforts of students and individuals in spreading the culture of the green economy and the sound relationship with natural ecosystems. She pointed out that the award’s vision lies in creating a sustainable green environment, which carries a message that raises the spirit of competition between the different student sectors in schools and universities to innovate, find and implement sustainable environmental solutions to urgent environmental problems that contribute to the dissemination of environmental culture, and consolidate awareness of the importance of preserving the environment to achieve and empower The components of sustainable development on the ground in educational environments.
