Expo 2020 Dubai: UN celebrates 76 years of creating hope


The United Nations celebrated 76 years of bringing the world together at Expo 2020 Dubai on Sunday.

“As the challenges increase, so does our level of determination to work together to create a better future. A future explored by Expo 2020: delivering on the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals for people and the planet, ”said Amina Mohammed, UN Under-Secretary-General, at a ceremony on the occasion of the UN Honor Day at the mega event.

United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24 of each year, marking the date of entry into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945. With the ratification of the charter, its founding document, the United Nations officially came into being. .

As part of the celebrations, Mohammed was joined by dignitaries from the UAE government and Expo leadership.

“We are celebrating 76 years of creating hope, solidarity and collaboration to overcome common challenges. These are challenges that have grown and multiplied with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, rising inequalities and the climate emergency, ”said the UN official.

The official ceremony took place at the Stage of Nations at Al Wasl Dome, followed by a cultural performance by the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO).

Among those in attendance were UN Commissioner General at Expo Maher Nasser; the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the United Arab Emirates, Dena Assaf; members of the diplomatic community; and representatives of national pavilions.

Assaf said: “The UAE has always supported the UN’s global, regional and local efforts. We are pleased to have the opportunity to celebrate this special day with the world since Expo 2020 Dubai, which only deepens our strong relationship with the government of the United Arab Emirates as we continue to work together to achieve our shared vision of a better world for all.

During his visit to the Expo, Mohammed also met Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Sheikh Abdullah and Mohammed discussed prospects for joint cooperation and ways to improve and support programs in various fields.

They also discussed a number of issues of common concern, including climate change and the importance of strengthening collective international action to mitigate the effects of climate change and find solutions to improve sustainability globally.
