Eneos, Mitsui & Co. to make hydrogen in UAE

Two Japanese firms are teaming up to produce hydrogen in the United Arab Emirates.

Petroleum wholesaler Eneos and trading firm Mitsui & Co. signed an agreement on Tuesday with the UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

The project comes as Japan embarks on a major push to slash its carbon footprint with more eco-friendly energy sources.

The firms will use natural gas in the UAE to make hydrogen. They will then convert it into liquid form and transport it to Japan by sea.

They say they’ll capture any carbon dioxide generated in the production process and bury it underground.

The firms are aiming to produce up to 50 thousand tons of hydrogen per year.
