Emirates Nuclear Energy signs letter of intent to cooperate with EDF

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation signed a letter of intent with the French group EDF, to develop a memorandum of understanding for cooperation between the two sides in the field of research and development in the nuclear energy sector.
This cooperation comes within the framework of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation’s commitment to developing the nuclear energy sector in the UAE, supporting innovation, providing environmentally friendly electric energy, and confronting the phenomenon of climate change. Nuclear energy, as well as exploring opportunities to produce green hydrogen using carbon-neutral nuclear energy.
The French EDF Group is a multinational, largely state-owned electric utility company in France. As the leading operator of the largest chain of nuclear power plants around the world, EDF supports the transition to environmentally friendly energy in various regions of the world, by exporting its expertise in the field of nuclear and renewable energy and other services in the energy sector.
Since November 2018, EDF has provided a range of services to the Nawah Energy Company, a subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, which is responsible for operating and maintaining Barakah plants. These services include the areas of operational safety, radiation protection, fuel cycle management and environmental monitoring, where expertise has been provided in these areas. Through engineering studies, on-site support, training and benchmarking workshops.
The letter of intent was signed during the activities of the UAE-French Supply Chain Initiative for the Nuclear Energy Sector “E Fusion” this year, which will continue over two days and be held in partnership between the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and the National Agency for Supporting the Development of the French Economy.
The initiative was launched by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, the French EDF Group and the French Nuclear Energy Association in 2019 with the aim of developing new Emirati-French relations in the nuclear energy sector.
It is noteworthy that the Barakah plant, which is being developed by the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, is one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world and includes four reactors of the advanced APR-1400 model.
