Electromagnetic compatibility labs launched in Abu Dhabi

The Arab world’s first electromagnetic compatibility labs have been unveiled at Abu Dhabi’s Technology Innovation Institute (TII).

The facility is composed of three laboratories, an electromagnetic compatibility semi-anechoic chamber, a pulsed power laboratory and a low noise emanation laboratory.

The new labs at the TII’s Directed Energy Research Centre (DERC) in Masdar City enables key technologies to be evaluated against electromagnetic compatibility and interference by reproducing man-made and natural electromagnetic hazards in the pulsed power and semi-anechoic chambers.

The laboratories have been designed to host different categories of equipment such as connected objects of the Internet of Things, drones and autonomous cars and telecommunications equipment among others and is fully automated for tests and measurements.

The semi-anechoic chamber can perform compliance tests for devices up to the size of a vehicle. The low noise emanation lab has been built on DERC specifications for applications with a minimum signal isolation capability of 120dB from 1MHz and 10GHz.

The high voltage lab can host large, pulsed power generators used to drive different applications reaching sub-nanosecond rise times and peak voltages in the range of 500kV.

“At DERC we support research on a wide range of topics in electromagnetic compatibility and interference on behalf of governments and enterprises to help create and maintain advanced electronic systems,” says Dr Chaouki Kasmi, Chief Researcher.

“We are excited to announce the launch of the electromagnetic compatibility labs in Abu Dhabi. They will help in pre-qualification of electronics against standards as well as hardening of critical infrastructures to operate safely in harsh environments.”

The Technology Innovation Institute is the applied research pillar of the UAE’s Advanced Technology Research Council.

The Directed Energy Research Centre undertakes research into advanced directed energy systems and technologies.
