Dubai sets out to be world’s best city to live in by 2040

Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has set up the new Supreme Committee for Urban Planning with the aim of making Dubai “the best city in the world to live in” by 2040.

The committee will ensure that government infrastructure and urban projects follow the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan unveiled in March – the seventh development plan for the emirate since 1960.

Among the plan’s goals are regenerating older parts of the city such as Deira, expanding green spaces and delivering more public transportation.

Members of the new committee include the heads of Dubai Municipality, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Dubai Development Authority, Ports, Dubai Land Department and the Supreme Council of Energy.

The Committee will ensure all urban planning entities are working together on the project, while carrying out major changes to the approved Urban Master Plan.

Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, Supreme Committee for Urban Planning’s chairman, said the goal was to make Dubai “the best city in the world to live in”.

“The Committee will coordinate the efforts of all concerned bodies in Dubai to implement the deliverables of the 2040 Urban Master Plan in line with Dubai’s development plan,” he said, adding it would address “housing and regulation of the real estate sector and improving wellbeing and creating opportunities within these and other fields.”
