Chinese Imports to Kenya Decline to KSh361.5 Billion

China is the largest importer of goods into Kenya. In the past year, the value of imports from China fell by KSh15 billion to KSh361.5 billion from KSh376.7 billion in 2019, according to provisional data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

The total value of imports into Kenya in 2020 was 8.8% lower than the value of imports in 2019. Imports into the country amounted to KSh1.64 trillion at the end of December 2020, compared to KSh1.80 trillion the year before.

Kenya mainly imported goods and services from United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Japan, India, the US, South Africa, Germany, Netherlands, France and of course China.

Value of Kenyan exports rose to KSh641.2 billion in 2020, from KSh595.4 billion in 2019, a 7% increase, as per provisional data released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. The main destinations for Kenyan exports were, United Kingdom, the US, Germany, France, Netherlands, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

Cut flower exports in the first 11 months of 2020 reached KSh102 billion, a KSh9.77 billion jump from the KSh92.3 billion worth of cut flower exports recorded in the same period in 2019. The value of fruit exports in the 11 months to November reached KSh17.8 billion while the value of vegetable exports in the same period hit KSh21.9 billion.
