Boris Johnson to attend funeral of UAE’s president Sheikh Khalifa

Sheikh Khalifa, whose death aged 73 was announced on Friday, had been president of the UAE since 2004.

Boris Johnson is to travel to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday to attend the funeral of the country’s president, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Downing Street has said.

Sheikh Khalifa, whose death aged 73 was announced on Friday, had been president of the UAE since 2004 – although his role had been largely ceremonial since he suffered a stroke in 2014.

In a statement issued on Friday, Mr Johnson paid tribute to him as “a wise and respected leader who will be missed enormously”.
