Mashego On Broos Impact At AFCON And Growing Mzansi Support

Bafana Bafana defender Terrence Mashego has hailed how head coach Hugo Broos has brought the squad together towards the semi-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa are set to face Nigeria in the last-four after overcoming the tournament surprise package Cape Verde 2-1 on penalties on Saturday evening.

Mashego, who looks set to now play an important role for the remainder of the tournament after the injury to Thapelo Maseko, fielded questions from international media over the influence of Broos after reaching the last-four stage for the first time since 2000.

“He’s a good coach, for him, he’s brought this team together, he’s an excellent coach, like how he prepares the team, how we train, he’s a very good coach, he cares about everyone [in the team],” Mashego said.

When pressed by iDiski Times about turning the tide of public support, having noted a negative perception and empty stadiums prior to their trip to Ivory Coast and over the past two years under Broos – Mashego said it’s something they’ve been asking for.

“There’s a lot of support in South Africa, we see it. Now the guys are believing, now everyone is believing in us and honestly from our side we’re grateful, we’re happy with the support – it’s something we’ve been asking for.”

Bafana and the Super Eagles will do battle on Wednesday evening at 19h00 at the Bouake Peace Stadium.
