Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo has shared his expectations for the Black Stars in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Polo, a former AFCON winner, anticipates that Ghana will finish as runners-up in Group B.
Grouped alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique, Ghana aims to secure its fifth continental title in the 34th edition of the AFCON set to take place in Ivory Coast.
Polo acknowledged the challenges in the group, emphasizing that advancement won’t be easy with strong opponents like Cape Verde and Mozambique.
“I expect Ghana to qualify as runner-up to Egypt in Group Two, but advancement will not be easy in the presence of Cape Verde and Mozambique,” he told btolat.com.
Despite the competition, he believes Ghana has the potential to progress to the next round by securing the second spot in the group, trailing behind Egypt.
The Black Stars have commenced their preparations for the tournament, opening camp in Kumasi on January 2.
Their training sessions are underway at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Abrankese. Ahead of the AFCON, Ghana is scheduled to play a friendly against Namibia on January 8 at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Ghana’s Group B fixtures in the AFCON 2023 include matches against Cape Verde on January 14, Egypt on January 18, and Mozambique on January 22, 2024.
The team aims to navigate through the group stage and make a strong push for the continental title in Ivory Coast.
