Bafana Bafana goalkeeper coach Grant Johnson believes the national team captain Ronwen Williams should be playing overseas.

Johnson believes the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper is currently among the best in the world, and backs him to walk away with the AFCON Golden Glove award.

On Saturday Williams single-handedly took South Africa to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup Of Nations, by saving four penalties during the shoot-outs and helped Bafana to beat Cape Verde 2-1.

“That was an incredible game, a tough fight from the boys,” Johnson tells KickOff.

“And of course, we ended up on the winning note with Ronwen performing heroics. I think Ronwen is finally getting the credit he deserves after all these years he’s been outstanding for both club and country.

“He saved the team on many occasions, people are now starting to realise what an important role he plays for the team. Ja, four penalty saves its unheard of its incredible and heroic. We did analyse the opposition and the way they kick. I gave Ronwen the information and he took it and used it to his ability, I mean you can know where the kicker is going but you still have to make saves,” added the coach.

“So he did very well, the video analyst and Ronwen worked closely in it and ja it all worked out. Putting in the hard work pays dividends I suppose. It’s an incredible achievement from Ronwen, and I’m sure the whole country is just proud of him, hopefully, it can continue in the semi-final and through to the final. He’s definitely in a shout for the Goalkeeper of the Tournament, and he’s one of the top keepers in Africa, he’s proved that on numerous occasions.

“I looked at the other goalkeepers in the tournament and I have seen nobody better than him. He’s probably got the best distribution in the world and I’m not even joking. I don’t see any goalkeeper in the world better than him in that department looking at build-ups from the back and so on.

“In terms of going overseas, in my opinion, he should have gone there three years ago. But I’m sure clubs will come knocking, he’s good enough to play there and in any country really, it’s up to him where he wants to go because I’m sure he will have several choices to choose from.”
