2023-10-05 19:31:46

The fourth edition of the “Consum local” month is open in Benin on October 4, 2023. This year, the initiative took on the dimension of a large UEMOA market dedicated to products from member countries.

The month of Consume Local with the appearance of a regional market is a first in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA). The ministers of UEMOA in charge of commerce want to better advocate “the valorization of national resources through the local processing of products, consumption habits within the Union” through the initiative.

The eight WAEMU countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo are participating “from October 4 to 26, 2023, [à] caravans and traveling markets” on Beninese territory. These activities are planned to take place in six towns in Benin, namely Abomey-Calavi, Bohicon, Cotonou, Djougou, Parakou and Porto-Novo.

In Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin, one of these many ephemeral markets comes to life at the Palais des Congrès from October 12 to 16, 2023. It is an exhibition and sale which “will allow you to discover a variety of food and non-food products” saccording to the website dedicated to the event.

Two themes for Consume Local

For about four years, the month of October is dedicated to the promotion of local products within UEMOA. In 2023, the activities on the agenda for “Consume Local” month revolve around two themes. Reflections should focus, during this regional celebration, on “what strategies to stimulate the consumption of local goods and services in the UEMOA area”. At the national level, the authorities are looking into “the concept of ready to consume locally through the essential aspects of our daily lives: housing, food and clothing”.

Challa Rafiou, guest on the 8 p.m. news on Wednesday October 4, 2023

The 2023 edition of the month of Consonsommons local marks the start of a regional and rotating celebration which aims to strengthen the adoption of goods and services from UEMOA. This is the particularity of this year’s celebration. It differs from the first three editions celebrated by country and whose achievements are already visible in Benin according to Challa Rafiou received on Wednesday October 4, 2023 in the ORTB television news. “As far as achievements are concerned, the qualities of the different products are increasingly improved. You will notice that we find more local products in distribution areas today”rejoiced Challa Rafiou, director of internal trade at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
