Maltese Cultural Celebration in Cairo Marks 60 Years of Independence

In a delightful celebration of Malta’s vibrant art, music, and cultural heritage, the historic Prince Taz Palace in Cairo will host a unique event on September 17, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Malta’s independence. This promising event not only honors the past but also bridges connections across cultures and generations.

The centerpiece of the celebration is an enchanting exhibition featuring 22 captivating photographs by Maltese amateur photographer Guido Stilon. These snapshots are meticulously curated by Magna Żmien, an inspiring grassroots initiative dedicated to preserving and digitizing Malta’s analogue memories, particularly from the rich tapestry of the 20th century. With Malta having recently gained attention for its artistic contributions during Valletta’s tenure as the European Capital of Culture in 2018, this exhibition promises to be a feast for the senses.

But that’s not all! Attendees will also have the opportunity to experience a thought-provoking short film by Maltese anthropologist Adrian Camilleri. This film, titled Bejn is-Sema u l-Art (Between Heaven and Earth), was initially commissioned by the Ritmu Roots Festival and produced by Festivals Malta. It dives into the life and legacy of one of Malta’s celebrated folk singers, Frans Baldacchino, affectionately known as ‘il-Budaj’. The film features previously unreleased footage that celebrates Malta’s music heritage and its evolution following independence.

Adding to the festivities will be a performance by Etnika, one of Malta’s most esteemed bands, known for their dynamic fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. Founded in 2000, Etnika has committed itself to extensive archival and field research, reviving long-forgotten instruments and melodies that reflect Malta’s musical roots and cultural diversity.

This incredible event is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Cairo, backed by various generous sponsors, including Investia, Marmonil, Methode Electronics, the Malta Tourism Authority, and the Ministry of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Together, they aim to create a cultural exchange that honors Malta’s rich heritage while fostering goodwill and collaboration with Egypt.
