  • The transfer window is still open while the Africa Cup of Nations is currently progressing in Ivory Coast
  • A teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo has left Al-Nassr to join Al-Ettifaq on loan for the rest of the season
  • Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq are looking to bolster their squad after Jordan Henderson departed the club

The Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast has taken centre stage, and many have forgotten that the transfer window is currently open.

While everyone is focused on the international football on offer, clubs are still trying to bolster their teams by bringing in new additions.

Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq have done just that by bringing in an AFCON star.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Ivory Coast international was one of two stars who made the move to Gerrard’s team on the deadline day in the Saudi Pro League. Fofana will provide a considerable boost to Al-Ettifaq after they lost the services of Jordan Henderson.

Fofana’s time at Al-Nassr

As noted by SuperSport.com, Fofana joined the Saudi side from RC Lens in Ligue 1 in July 2023.

He made 112 appearances for the French outfit before moving on. While he enjoyed a good run of games in Ligue 1, he has only featured 19 times for Al-Nassr.

He has scored two goals and registered just one assist during that time, Transfermarkt noted.

Fofana’s impressive showing at AFCON

With Ivory Coast hosting the tournament, more eyes have been on Fofana and his teammates.

The midfielder got his team and himself off to the perfect start in the tournament as he scored in the opening game. IOL reported that Fofana scored within four minutes of the opening game as the Ivorians went on to beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0.

Sports Brief previously expanded on how Seko Fofana grabbed the first goal of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The former RC Lens midfielder pounced on a pass from Franck Kessie before beautifully curling it past the Guinea-Bissau keeper.

Fofana almost scored a second goal in the 35th minute, but the Guinea-Bissau keeper pulled off a fine save to deny him.
