The debate about the Premier Soccer League being the best in Africa could have just been settled.
Thirty-four PSL players will be at the Africa Cup of Nations finals, making the local league the second highest provider of players at the continental tournament.
Mamelodi Sundowns, the club with the most players at the tournament, will have 11 players in Ivory Coast.
“Obviously it shows we have talent in South Africa,” former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Banks Setlhodi told Scrolla.Africa.
“We are doing something right. Imagine even in Egypt they don’t have that number. Those who criticise the PSL should think otherwise.
“Let us criticise our league in a positive way and not always find the wrongs. You can see we have contributed strongly to Afcon.”
The likes of Mamelodi Sundowns forward Peter Shalulile, Orlando Pirates’ Deon Hotto, Riaan Hanamub, Sekhukune goalkeeper Badra Sangare and Nigeria shot-stopper Stanley Nwabili are some of the PSL players who will be at Afcon.
The French Ligue 1 is the biggest contributor at Afcon with 56 players.
Bafana are in Group E together with neighbours Namibia, Tunisia and Mali, who heavily rely on Europe-based players.
Mali will have 10 players who play in France.
