Drone Operations Take Off at Marina de Lagos: A New Era of Airspace Management
In a groundbreaking move for drone technology in maritime settings, Marina de Lagos on Portugal’s stunning Algarve coast is set to implement the innovative Approval Services platform from Altitude Angel. This development promises to revolutionize how drone operators manage flight operations, making the experience smoother and more efficient.
The Approval Services platform, already a staple at airports, heliports, and aerodromes across the UK, enables drone operators to submit flight plans digitally. This platform will allow operators to take off and land within the marina, facilitating quick access approval and understanding the operational charges associated with these flights, all from the convenience of an app.
Drone operators can now easily request access via the Drone Assist app or the DroneSafetyMap.com, with potential for near-instant approvals—a feature that could reshape the way recreational drone enthusiasts document their adventures at sea. Currently, most drone flights at the marina are casual, primarily involving photography and videography of boats. However, exciting plans are on the horizon. Marina de Lagos is exploring new service offerings, including innovative ‘shore to ship’ deliveries, enhancing marina user experiences.
With over 470 berths, Marina de Lagos ranks among the most popular marinas in Portugal, showcasing a vibrant community of both locals and tourists. The introduction of Altitude Angel’s Approval Services will provide the marina management with valuable insights into the airspace dynamics above and surrounding the marina, essential for ensuring safety and efficiency.
Chris Forster, the Chief Operating Officer of Altitude Angel, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration. “This is fantastic news for Marina de Lagos, setting a precedent for marinas and harbors throughout Europe and beyond. As drones become a common sight in both recreational and commercial capacities, understanding shared airspace is crucial. Our Approval Services will empower Marina de Lagos to manage these drone operations more safely and effectively.”
Martinho Fortunato, CEO of Marina de Lagos, echoed this sentiment. “At Marina de Lagos, we are committed to enhancing safety and service quality for our clients. Partnering with Altitude Angel to establish airspace controls over and around our marina—making us the first in Portugal to do so—is an exciting step forward. We look forward to sharing our experiences with the wider marina community in the coming months.”
With the integration of this cutting-edge technology, Marina de Lagos is not only enhancing the safety and functionality of its operations but also paving the way for a new chapter in maritime drone services. This shift illustrates a growing trend in harmonizing technology with traditional industries, transforming how we interact with the skies above.
