In a remarkable initiative aimed at enhancing digital inclusivity, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulation Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) has successfully trained 35 individuals with disabilities from the picturesque regions of Manicaland and Mashonaland Central. This pivotal event took place in the serene town of Nyanga and culminated in an inspiring certification ceremony last Friday.
Over five days, participants immersed themselves in a range of essential topics, including internet navigation, awareness of cyberbullying, and maintaining online security. The training was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Internet Society of Zimbabwe (ISOC), showcasing a strong commitment to uplift marginalized communities.
Kennedy Dewera, Potraz’s executive director, represented director-general Gift Machengete at the ceremony and highlighted the critical nature of this initiative in bridging the gap between individuals with disabilities and their able-bodied counterparts. Dewera passionately stated, “These initiatives aim to create a more inclusive digital community where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.” He encouraged participants to not only apply their new skills but also to share their knowledge within their communities, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.
Echoing Dewera’s sentiments, Tobias Mdlozera, the Rushinga district chairperson for the National Council of Disabled Persons of Zimbabwe, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the training. “This invaluable experience has enhanced our technical skills and significantly boosted our confidence in navigating the digital world,” he remarked. Mdlozera firmly believes that this training will lead to profound improvements in both personal and professional growth for the participants.
Potraz’s commitment to social responsibility doesn’t end with this training program. The organization actively pursues sustainable development initiatives that support vulnerable communities in various ways, including healthcare, provision of essential goods, and infrastructure development. Their dedication shines a light on the importance of inclusive growth, an essential pillar for progress in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
As Zimbabwe continues to advance towards a more inclusive society, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals with disabilities. By equipping them with vital digital skills, we are fostering independence and creating a more vibrant community where everyone can contribute to the nation’s development.
