Madagascar to Host Groundbreaking International Taekwondo Instructor Internship

In an exciting development for martial arts enthusiasts, Madagascar is poised to host its first-ever international Taekwondo instructor internship from May 2 to May 4 at the Palais des Sports Mahamasina. This prestigious event will be led by Grand Master Ung Kim Lan, a prominent figure in the international Taekwondo community and a disciple of the art’s founder, General Choi Hong Hi.

The internship marks a significant milestone for Madagascar, showcasing the country’s dedication to promoting Taekwondo and advancing the skills of local practitioners. This initiative is expected to attract participants from five countries so far, with the possibility of more joining as registrations remain open.

The concept of hosting such an impactful event came to fruition through the concerted efforts of Madagascar’s national Taekwondo body and Paul Weiler, the president of the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). His visit to Madagascar in November 2024 revealed his admiration for the potential of local practitioners and reinforced the importance of technical updates for instructors.

What’s particularly notable about this internship is that it provides an accessible opportunity for practitioners who might find international training sessions prohibitively expensive. By organizing the event domestically, numerous practitioners will benefit from the expertise of Grand Master Kim Lan without the need for extensive travel.

Serge Rasanda, a local martial arts advocate, emphasized the positive implications of this initiative, stating that it will not only enhance the skills of current black belt holders (who must be at least 4th Dan to participate) but also spur greater interest and investment in Taekwondo throughout Madagascar. This event is set to foster a strong community of black belt instructors, capable of elevating the discipline within the nation and beyond.

The upcoming internship is not just an opportunity; it’s a celebration of Taekwondo’s rich heritage and the dedication of those who practice it in Madagascar. As the country gears up for this remarkable event, there’s a palpable sense of excitement and pride among martial arts enthusiasts.

Stay tuned for more updates from this promising event, which is expected to positively impact the sports landscape in Madagascar.
