Tanzania Prioritizes Education: Rehabilitation and Safety Measures in Schools

DODOMA: In a significant move to enhance the educational infrastructure in Tanzania, the government has successfully rehabilitated 906 old secondary schools over the past four years. This initiative, spearheaded under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving educational standards across the nation.

During a recent session in the National Assembly, Deputy Minister in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, Ms. Zainab Katimba, updated legislators on the ongoing efforts to ensure that all educational institutions receive the necessary attention they deserve. She reassured the House that the government will continue to allocate funds dedicated to the renovation of schools, emphasizing that education is a priority for the administration.

Responding to inquiries from Aysharose Mattembe, a member of the Special Seat from the CCM party, along with other legislators concerned about the building of fences around schools for student security, Ms. Katimba confirmed that measures to bolster the safety of students are in place. The importance of constructing secure perimeters around schools has gained traction, especially in urban areas where safety can be a concern.

Legislators, including Mr. Sebastian Kapufi (Mpanda Urban -CCM) and Mr. Omari Kigua (Kilindi-CCM), expressed their desire for government support in constructing fences for local secondary schools, reflecting a shared commitment to creating safer learning environments. In response, Ms. Katimba highlighted that an impressive allocation has already been made, with 190.7 billion Tanzanian shillings earmarked for fencing projects at various primary and secondary schools in the Temeke Municipality, including Wailes and Likwati Primary Schools.

Looking towards the future, the Deputy Minister outlined the government’s plans for the 2025/2026 fiscal year, which include a budget of 200 million shillings for fencing at Kibasila, Mji Mpya, and Kibondemaji Primary Schools, along with an allocation of 150 million shillings for new secondary schools such as Changombe, Makangarawe, and Mwembe Bamia. “Our goal is to create a safe haven for students where they can learn and thrive without worry,” Ms. Katimba stated passionately.

This comprehensive approach not only addresses the physical infrastructure of schools but also places a vital focus on the safety and well-being of students, fostering an environment conducive to learning. With a dedicated push towards educational reform, Tanzania is taking significant strides in nurturing future generations.
