In a bold stride towards enhancing higher education in Nigeria, New Horizons, a prominent technology training institute, has forged partnerships with four additional universities. This initiative focuses on equipping students with essential 21st-century skills through internationally recognized certifications in ICT (Information and Communications Technology) and project management.
The universities joining this transformative journey include Lagos University Teaching Hospital Schools, Hillside University of Science and Technology, Aletheia University, and Ahman Pategi University. Each of these institutions aims to adapt to the ever-evolving job market that demands not just academic proficiency but also practical, market-driven skills.
Mr. Tim Akano, MD/CEO of New Horizons, was at the forefront of these partnership ceremonies. He emphasized that these universities are taking significant steps to ensure their curricula remain relevant in today’s dynamic educational landscape, where advancements such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine learning are at the forefront of industry transformation. Akano shared that New Horizons brings 43 years of international experience to the table, boasting a network of 370 centers across 71 countries and two decades of proven success in Nigeria.
As the initiative looks to unlock the potential of countless graduates, its key objective is to tackle graduate unemployment by enhancing employability through entrepreneurial training. The partnership aligns well with New Horizons’ existing collaborations with 25 Nigerian universities, ensuring that undergraduates are well-prepared to compete globally, whether in the United States, Europe, Asia, or beyond.
The enthusiasm surrounding this initiative was palpable during various ceremonial signings. For instance, on September 23, 2024, at Hillside University of Science and Technology in Ekiti State, Vice-Chancellor Professor Iheayinchukwu Okoro led the charge, marking the official commencement of the training program. At Aletheia University in Ogun State, Professor Amos Adeyinka highlighted the potential for increased student value, both academically and entrepreneurially.
In a similar vein, an event at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital affirmed the commitment to merging cutting-edge ICT training with global medical standards. Chief Medical Director Professor Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo expressed his excitement, noting how this collaboration would elevate the institution’s educational offerings.
With such promising partnerships taking root, the future of Nigerian education looks bright as it aligns more closely with international standards, preparing graduates not just to thrive locally but also to excel on the global stage. This initiative not only promises to enrich the academic experiences of thousands but also aims to transform them into highly skilled professionals who can make significant contributions to various industries around the world.
