“Discover the Surprising Health Benefits of Garri and Bread for Managing Diabetes!”

Eating Garri: A Sweet Surprise for Diabetics, Says Health Expert

In an insightful virtual roundtable organized by Novo Nordisk, celebrated health expert Prof. Olufemi Fasanmade from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital revealed exciting insights about traditional Nigerian foods and their benefits for individuals living with diabetes. This discussion coincided with the observance of World Diabetes Day 2024, a global event aimed at raising awareness about the condition, its management, and prevention.

Prof. Fasanmade shared a refreshing perspective, affirming that many traditional foods, including the beloved staple garri, can fit into a healthy diet for diabetics. “Most traditional foods are actually quite nutritious and can be very beneficial. Foods such as vegetable soup and beans not only provide essential nutrients but also have protective benefits,” he pointed out. This challenges the common perception that certain local dishes should be entirely avoided by those managing diabetes.

The health expert emphasized that garri, often enjoyed in various forms, such as eba or just soaked in water, is a good option for diabetics—as long as portion sizes are managed effectively. He suggested that a serving size should be limited to roughly the size of a person’s fist. “You can absolutely enjoy garri; it might even be better than wheat in some cases,” he added, encouraging a balanced approach to traditional dietary practices.

Furthermore, Prof. Fasanmade reassured attendees that bread is not off-limits for those with diabetes. “Whole wheat bread, particularly unsweetened varieties, can be included in moderation,” he explained. This opens up discussions about how cultural foods can be adapted to meet health needs without sacrificing flavor or enjoyment.

In addition to garri and bread, he noted that individuals managing diabetes can safely incorporate a variety of snacks and cereals into their diets. Items like granola, walnuts, cashews, and almonds are excellent options that not only satisfy cravings but also provide beneficial nutrients.

This conversation highlights the importance of embracing traditional foods and recognizing their potential health benefits. By elevating the conversation around local cuisine, we can foster a more positive dialogue about diabetes management that focuses on balance and mindfulness.

As we celebrate the flavors of our culture, let’s also adapt our eating habits to promote health and well-being. After all, making informed dietary choices is a delicious way to take control of our health journey.
