$3m deal to promote green tourism at Red Sea hotspot – African Insider

Cape Town – Egypt and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) have signed a $3 million deal to promote sustainable tourism and biodiversity conservation in the Red Sea tourism hotspot of Hurghada.

The investment in the Green Hurghada project will be used to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, preserve biodiversity and promote climate-smart technology within the tourism, energy and transport sectors, as reported by Egypt Today.

According to Middle East Economy, the funding for the project has been provided by the Global Environment Facility, an international fund focused on biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.

Funding will be used to conduct a strategic environmental assessment to identify key environmental challenges and develop targeted interventions to address them.

Together with Sharm El-Sheikh, Hurghada is a vital tourist destination along Egypt’s Red Sea coast. In 2023, the cities attracted 7 million visitors, almost half of Egypt’s 14.9 million tourists.
