Africazine:
Flamenco takes center stage in Marrakech this October, showcasing a blend of tradition and modernity.
Dancer Irene Morales will present “RAW” on October 13 at 7 p.m. at Théâtre Dar Attakafa. The performance is part of the “Congreso Mundial de Flamenco,” featuring singer Francisco Blanco, known as El Calerito, and guitarist José Fermín Fernández.
Irene Morales Brings Flamenco to Life
“RAW” strips flamenco down to its essential elements: body, voice, guitar, rhythm, space, and silence. Morales’s choreography contrasts precision with instinct, control with vulnerability. This performance aims to explore the emotional core of flamenco through gesture, sound, and silence.
The production incorporates electronic textures alongside live instrumentation, allowing for a contemporary interpretation while honoring traditional flamenco roots. Morales describes “RAW” as a representation of purity and a desire to return to the essence of the art form.
Morocco’s Role in the Global Flamenco Scene
The Marrakech performance is part of a larger Moroccan program running throughout October, featuring 14 shows across eight cities. This marks the fifth consecutive year of the World Flamenco Congress in Morocco, which also includes film screenings and workshops.
This year’s focus is on emerging performers and women shaping contemporary flamenco. The Instituto Cervantes emphasizes the congress as a platform for exploring the evolution of flamenco while maintaining its popular roots.
