The newly redeveloped Huanggang Port has seen a significant surge in traffic during its opening hours.
In the first two hours after opening, over 5,100 travelers and 953 vehicles passed through the port, marking a 60 percent increase in passenger throughput and a 30 percent rise in vehicular traffic compared to previous figures. This early success is attributed to the full operation of immigration counters and efficient public transport arrangements.
Surge in Traffic at Huanggang Port
The Huanggang Port’s reopening has generated impressive numbers, with 1,200 travelers heading northbound and nearly 2,000 traveling southbound by 8 am. This influx demonstrates the port’s importance as a cross-border transit point. Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan Kwok-ki emphasized the significance of opening on a Monday, allowing staff to adapt to new workflows before the upcoming holiday peak.
Cross-border bus operators reported smooth traffic, with early coaches from urban Hong Kong experiencing quicker passenger clearance than before. The Hong Kong Non-Franchised Bus Association noted that clear signage and organized arrangements contributed to manageable passenger flow during the weekday.
Huanggang Port’s Future Traffic Expectations
As the three-day Chung Yeung Festival approaches, expectations for passenger flow at the port are high. Eddie Choi Shun-kei, chairman of the Hong Kong Non-Franchised Bus Association, anticipates a new post-opening high in traffic. He also mentioned plans to advocate for extending the transport concession scheme to cross-border buses, which would benefit elderly passengers.
