Cairo is embarking on an ambitious greening initiative to enhance urban life.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly recently inspected various agricultural and afforestation projects in Cairo Governorate. This follows President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives for the “Greening Greater Cairo” project, which aims to transform vacant land into parks and green spaces.
Prime Minister’s Commitment to Green Spaces
During his tour, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for an integrated national program to increase tree cover along major corridors and city entrances. The initiative aims to improve the quality of life by enhancing green space per capita. The inspection included tree-planting efforts beneath key bridges and areas in Cairo.
Madbouly was accompanied by Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad and Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber. They discussed the importance of collaboration among government bodies, NGOs, and citizens to achieve the project’s goals.
Cairo’s Greening Implementation Plan
The “Greening Cairo” implementation plan is structured around three main pillars: government agencies, environmental NGOs, and active participation from citizens and local organizations. This collaborative approach includes public awareness campaigns focused on tree planting and the preservation of green spaces.
More than 3,000 trees and nearly 700,000 shrubs and plants have already been planted as part of this initiative. The plan aims to plant one million plants within a year, including 60,000 trees, with a specific allocation for each district based on its size and available planting areas.
