Nedbank Namibia has donated N 000 to the Namibia Mathematics Institute (NMI) to enhance mathematics teaching and learning. This funding will support teacher development workshops and provide essential learning tools aimed at improving mathematics education for young Namibians.

The contribution from Nedbank Namibia is a strategic move to bolster mathematics skills among the youth. The NMI will utilize these funds to conduct workshops that focus on teacher development, which is vital for improving classroom performance. Mathematics is foundational for careers in science, technology, engineering, and finance, making this initiative essential for Namibia’s transition to a knowledge-driven economy.
Despite the importance of mathematics, many teachers require ongoing training to enhance their teaching methods. Weak performance in mathematics can limit students’ access to higher education and contribute to a shortage of skilled professionals in critical sectors.
Positive Outcomes from Teacher Development Programs
NMI’s workshops have already demonstrated significant improvements in teacher competency. For instance, during a recent workshop in Keetmanshoop, only four out of 22 teachers scored above 50% in a mathematics assessment before training. Post-workshop, 16 teachers scored above 50%, with seven achieving over 70%. Similar results were noted in the Omusati Region, indicating the effectiveness of targeted support.
In addition to teacher training, NMI engages directly with students through initiatives like Map and Money Maths, which apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations. This practical approach helps learners grasp the relevance of mathematics in everyday life, such as financial management.
