Namibia is transitioning its HIV-AIDS response to a sustainable national model, marking a significant milestone in public health.
The governments of Namibia and the United States announced a phased reduction of US financial assistance for Namibia’s HIV-AIDS response. This shift comes as Namibia has achieved epidemic control and surpassed global targets, moving towards a technical cooperation model over the next year.
Namibia Achieves Milestone in HIV-AIDS Control
Namibia has become one of the first countries to exceed international HIV-AIDS targets. The joint statement from the Ministry of International Relations and Trade emphasizes that Namibia’s leadership in combating HIV-AIDS has enabled it to sustain these gains through nationally led systems.
The country has financed and procured all antiretroviral medicines and HIV test kits, ensuring continued access to treatment and diagnostic services. US support has played a complementary role by investing in HIV testing, counselling, and community-based organizations.
Key Achievements in HIV-AIDS Response
Namibia has reached the impressive 96-98-98 targets, exceeding the UNAIDS 95-95-95 fast-track goals for HIV-AIDS testing, treatment, and viral suppression. Additionally, the country has nearly eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV, with 97% of infants born to HIV-positive mothers testing negative.
Currently, over 220,000 people are receiving life-saving antiretroviral therapy through Namibia’s public health system. The country has also established robust national health information systems and laboratory networks to maintain long-term epidemic control.
