The Kangankunde rare earths mine in Malawi is set to transform the nation’s economy by diversifying beyond agriculture.
Lindian Resources has confirmed that the Kangankunde rare earths mine, located 80 kilometers north of Blantyre, will begin production by the end of this year. This project aims to extract critical minerals essential for modern technologies, which could significantly reduce Malawi’s reliance on agriculture, currently responsible for 80% of export earnings.
Kangankunde Mine Production Set to Begin Soon
Construction at the Kangankunde mine is currently underway, with production expected to start by year-end. The mine is projected to extract 500,000 tonnes per annum of monazite concentrate ore, producing 20,000 tonnes per annum of concentrate after processing. Zac Komur, Executive Director of Lindian Resources, emphasized the importance of this project, noting that it should have been operational years ago.
In addition to the initial production plans, a stage two feasibility study is being conducted to explore the potential for expanding production to 120,000 tonnes per annum of concentrates. This expansion could further enhance the mine’s contribution to the local and national economy.
Malawi’s Rare Earths Potential and Economic Diversification
Malawi is home to some of the world’s most significant deposits of rare earth minerals, which are crucial for various technologies, including smartphones and electric vehicles. The World Bank projects that Malawi could generate up to billion from mineral exports between 2026 and 2040, with rare earths playing a central role in this economic outlook.
