Namibia has reaffirmed its commitment to statistical excellence with the reappointment of Alex Shimuafeni.
Shimuafeni will serve as the statistician-general of the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA) for another five years, from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2031. His leadership will guide the NSA through significant projects, including the 2023 Population and Housing Census and the upcoming strategic plan for 2027-2032.
Shimuafeni’s Leadership and Achievements
Alex Shimuafeni first took office in 2016 and has since been pivotal in advancing Namibia’s statistical capabilities. His initial contract was renewed for a second term from April 2021 to March 2026, reflecting the NSA board’s confidence in his leadership.
During his tenure, Shimuafeni oversaw the completion of the 2023 Population and Housing Census, a critical undertaking for national planning and resource allocation. The board highlighted his role in publishing several thematic reports that will inform policy and development strategies.
Strategic Focus for the Future
Looking ahead, Shimuafeni will implement the NSA’s 2027-2032 strategic plan, which aligns with the government’s Sixth National Development Plan. This plan emphasizes statistical coordination, governance, and evidence-based planning.
The NSA aims to enhance economic and regional development across Namibia’s 14 regions, ensuring that statistical data supports informed decision-making at all levels of government.
