Motoum participated in the Community Engagement Exchange (CEE) programme in the United States, selected from over 8,000 applicants. His experience in Houston and Washington DC has inspired him to implement community development initiatives in Papua New Guinea (PNG), focusing on climate resilience and youth empowerment.
Motoum’s Journey from East Sepik to the US
Hezron Motoum hails from Woginara, a remote community in East Sepik, Papua New Guinea. His educational path led him to Divine Word University in Madang, where he developed a passion for community development. After successfully navigating three rounds of interviews, he was selected for the CEE programme, which opened doors to new opportunities in the United States.
During his fellowship in Houston, Texas, Motoum engaged in projects centered on environmental stewardship and green infrastructure. This exposure provided him with innovative approaches to building safer and healthier communities. He also visited Washington DC, where he connected with PNG Embassy representatives to discuss his experiences and future contributions to his home country.
Implementing Lessons Learned in Papua New Guinea
Now back in PNG, Motoum is eager to apply the lessons he learned abroad. He co-founded Future Horizon, an organization aimed at developing initiatives that address climate resilience, water, sanitation, hygiene, and youth empowerment. The first programs will start with workshops at Divine Word University, eventually reaching schools and rural communities.
Motoum’s commitment to community development reflects his belief that local challenges can be addressed through collaboration and innovative thinking. His journey serves as an inspiration for other young Papua New Guineans, encouraging them to overcome obstacles and strive for their goals.
