The Kano State House of Assembly has taken significant steps to regulate private school fees.
On Monday, the assembly passed the Kano State Private and Voluntary Institutions Board (Amendment) Bill, 2026. This legislation aims to enhance regulatory oversight and protect parents from arbitrary fee increases.

The new law mandates that private primary and secondary schools must consult with their Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) before any fee hikes. Additionally, any approved increase cannot exceed 10 per cent of the current tuition fees.
House Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini emphasized the importance of this amendment in safeguarding parents’ interests. The law also stipulates that private schools cannot charge more than 10 per cent above the official registration fees set by external examination bodies like WAEC, NECO, and NBTE.

These provisions are part of a broader initiative to streamline administration and elevate educational standards across Kano State.
