Kano State is taking significant steps to enhance its criminal justice system.
The Kano State Government has launched the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS) to improve access to legal representation for suspects. This initiative aims to strengthen the administration of criminal justice and was announced by Attorney-General Abdulkarim Kabiru-Maude during an onboarding session in Kano.

The Police Duty Solicitor Scheme is designed to provide suspects with early access to legal representation at police stations. This initiative is expected to safeguard constitutional rights, reduce unnecessary detention, and help decongest custodial facilities. Kabiru-Maude emphasized that the scheme is a landmark reform reflecting the commitment to translating justice reforms into practical outcomes.
Organized by the Kano State Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the onboarding session gathered various stakeholders from the justice sector. This includes the Commissioner of Police, representatives from the Chief Judge of Kano State, and officials from the Ministry of Justice.
