Morocco Plans 42 Major Dams by 2050 to Address Water Scarcity

Morocco is taking decisive steps to secure its water future by planning the construction of 42 major dams by 2050.

Since 2021, Morocco has commissioned eight dams with a total storage capacity of 1.89 billion cubic meters. Currently, 14 additional dam projects are underway, including significant structures like the Beni Azimane dam and the Sidi Abbou dam.

Morocco’s Strategic Water Resource Management

Morocco’s ambitious agenda includes the construction of 42 major dams to address increasing water scarcity. The Ministry of Equipment and Water is actively overseeing these projects, which are crucial for the country’s water security.

Among the eight dams already commissioned, notable ones include M’dez in Sefrou and Koudiat Borna in Sidi Kacem. These structures are pivotal in enhancing the nation’s water storage capabilities.

Morocco: Key figures on dam projects

  • 42 major dams planned by 2050
  • 1.89 billion cubic meters total storage capacity from 8 commissioned dams

Addressing Water Scarcity Through Innovation

In response to pressing water needs, Morocco has initiated early filling of reservoirs in four dams still under construction. This proactive measure is essential as the country faces recurring drought cycles.

Morocco is also investing in seawater desalination and developing water highways to diversify its water resources. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impacts of climate change on water availability.

Upcoming Projects and Initiatives

  • Realization of 68 small dam projects by 2027

Morocco’s commitment to enhancing its water infrastructure is vital for its future sustainability.
