Traditional rulers in Abuja are pushing for greater political representation.
During an appreciation rally, they praised President Bola Tinubu for his developmental projects while demanding the creation of three Senatorial seats for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Ona of Abaji, Dr Adamu Baba Yunusa, emphasized that the FCT deserves more representation due to its population.
Monarchs Demand Increased Political Representation
The traditional rulers expressed their gratitude to President Tinubu for transforming Abuja’s rural and urban areas. They believe that the current representation is insufficient given the FCT’s growing population. Yunusa articulated that the FCT should have more than one senatorial district to reflect its demographic significance.
In addition to the senatorial seats, the monarchs called for the establishment of more Federal Constituencies and Area Councils. This decentralization is aimed at bringing governance closer to the grassroots, ensuring that local needs are adequately addressed.
FCT Minister Urged to Advocate for Indigenous Rights
The monarchs appealed to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to help present their demands to President Tinubu. They highlighted the need for better representation on the Board of Trustees of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC), asserting their status as a key stakeholder state. Wike, honored with a chieftaincy title, encouraged the community to support Tinubu’s administration.
