Ho Chi Minh City is advancing its urban transport infrastructure with the groundbreaking of a new metro line.
On April 29, authorities initiated construction on the Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem section of Metro Line 2, marking the city’s third urban railway project. This line will span 5.99 kilometres and is notable for being Vietnam’s first fully underground metro project, featuring a tunnel beneath the Saigon River.
Ho Chi Minh City Launches Major Metro Project
The Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem section will start at Ben Thanh Station and conclude at Thu Thiem Station. This project is part of a broader effort to enhance public transport in the city, following the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien and Ben Thanh-Tham Luong lines. The metro will utilize a fully automated operating system, ensuring efficient and reliable service.
Designed for longevity, the metro’s structural lifespan is projected to be a minimum of 100 years. The construction will take place at a maximum depth below the riverbed to guarantee safety and technical feasibility, particularly as it crosses the Saigon River.
Strategic Importance of Thu Thiem Station
Thu Thiem Station is set to become a pivotal transport hub, linking the Thu Thiem-Long Thanh metro line and the North-South high-speed railway. This integration will facilitate seamless travel for passengers, allowing direct access from Tan Son Nhat Airport to Long Thanh Airport without platform transfers.
The project is backed by the Dai Quang Minh consortium, which emphasizes the compatibility of technology standards across the metro lines. This strategic alignment will enhance operational efficiency and passenger convenience.
Next Steps for the Metro Line Development
- Completion of the Ben Thanh-Thu Thiem section construction.
- Integration of technology standards across metro lines.
- Development of Thu Thiem Station as a transport hub.
Ho Chi Minh City’s new metro line will transform urban transport and connectivity.
