PDP Faction Re-elects Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu as Leaders

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its leadership amid internal divisions.

During a recent convention in Abuja, Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu were re-elected as national chairman and national secretary, respectively. The re-election was achieved by consensus, with over 2,500 delegates participating and endorsing a 19-member National Working Committee.

PDP Re-election Signals Unity Within Wike’s Faction

The re-election of Mohammed and Anyanwu took place at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. The motion for their re-election was moved by Kingsley Chinda, the House of Representatives Minority Leader, and received unanimous approval from the delegates. This event marks a significant moment for the Wike-backed faction, showcasing a strong show of unity.

Alongside the leadership positions, other key officers were affirmed, including Aaron Chukwuemeka as deputy national chairman (South) and Yusufu Akirikwen as deputy national chairman (North). The new National Working Committee also includes various members tasked with steering the party’s direction.

Navigating Internal Tensions and Rivalries

The PDP has faced months of internal tension, primarily due to disagreements over party primaries and leadership appointments. These disputes have led to the emergence of rival factions within the party, driven by regional political rivalries. The Wike-backed faction seeks to position itself as a reformist group advocating for transparency in party governance.

Former governor Nyesom Wike, now serving as a minister in the APC federal government, has played a crucial role in shaping the party’s leadership strategy. His involvement is seen as pivotal in preparing the PDP for future electoral challenges.

Next Steps for the Wike-backed PDP Faction

  • Focus on party mobilization efforts.
  • Prepare for upcoming electoral contests in 2027.

The PDP’s recent convention highlights a critical moment of reaffirmation and unity within its ranks.
