Zambia's Quest for Clean Water: A Promising Partnership for Sustainable Solutions
In Zambia, access to clean and reliable water is more than just a necessity; it is vital for the health and well-being of communities throughout the nation. World Vision Zambia is leading the way by ensuring that water systems not only serve their purpose immediately but also remain sustainable for years to come, particularly in challenging operational environments.
Recently, World Vision Zambia took a major step forward by formalizing a partnership with the Professional Insurance Corporation Zambia (PICZ) through a Service Level Agreement. This agreement is designed to protect and ensure rapid repairs to the water systems built across the country, marking a significant move toward long-term sustainability.
At the signing ceremony, Marc Nosbach, the National Director of World Vision Zambia, proudly highlighted the organization’s achievements since 2021. He shared some impressive statistics, stating, “We have provided clean water to 968,000 individuals, improved sanitation for over 1.3 million people, and delivered dignified hygiene services to an additional 1.2 million.” The initiatives leading to such significant impact included drilling and rehabilitating 1,553 hand pumps and the installation of 517 solar-powered piped water schemes, which collectively deliver over 15,500 tap stands across Zambia.
Yet, as Mr. Nosbach pointed out, the real challenge lies not just in constructing these water systems, but in ensuring they continue to function effectively. With this partnership, 208 water systems are currently insured by PICZ, and over 100 water point committees are in the process of securing further coverage. This demonstrates a commitment from local communities to take ownership of their water solutions.
The newly minted agreement allows World Vision Zambia to respond swiftly when a water system malfunctions, significantly speeding up the claims process and minimizing downtime. This means that communities can count on a reliable supply of water—an essential resource for daily life.
“Water infrastructure sustainability is vital and a collective responsibility,” emphasized Mr. Nosbach. “Together, we can ensure not just reliable access to clean water, but also bolster climate resilience and empower communities to thrive.”
Moses Siame, Managing Director of PICZ, echoed this sentiment, expressing his company’s dedication to the partnership. He noted, “Our commitment is not just to provide insurance but also to possibly collaborate on future projects.” His strong support underscores the vital nature of partnerships in achieving ambitious goals.
Looking toward the future, World Vision Zambia aims to reach an additional 700,000 people with clean water by 2030, which will involve the construction of over 1,150 new water systems. Partnerships like this one with PICZ are instrumental in turning these ambitious plans into reality.
