Empowering Women Through Craft: SELINTAANBA Vocational Training Center's Inspiring Initiative in Burkina Faso
In a heartening development for women in the Fada N’Gourma region of Burkina Faso, the SELINTAANBA vocational training center has recently concluded an enriching training session aimed at empowering 50 internally displaced women. Focused on the traditional art of weaving and dyeing Kokodonda fabric, this initiative not only fosters skill development but also contributes to the socio-economic empowerment of participants.
According to Africazine, the program was divided into two distinct phases to accommodate various skill levels among the participants. The first group consisted of 25 women, including three primary school teachers, who completed an intensive five-day course dedicated to the intricacies of Kokodonda fabric dyeing. Meanwhile, the second cohort, also 25 strong, undertook a more extensive, ten-day training in the art of weaving. This well-structured program was spearheaded by Bouampoundi Ouoba, founder of SELINTAANBA, and made possible through support from a collaborative partner organization.
While the training was a resounding success, challenges did emerge, particularly concerning dietary needs during the training period. However, Ms. Ouoba, passionate about her cause, emphasized that the center provides training at no cost to individuals eager to learn the crafts of weaving and dyeing. More importantly, she revealed that after a year of dedicated learning, participants could qualify to sit for the Professional Qualification Certificate (CQP) exam, an important step towards professional recognition.
One of the notable aspirations voiced during the training was by Zolika Dima, one of the primary school teachers involved. She warmly expressed her intent to share her newfound dyeing skills with her students, ensuring the legacy of this beautiful craft continues to thrive through education.
Since its inception in 2015 and official recognition in 2021, SELINTAANBA has committed itself to the mission of enhancing the lives of internally displaced persons, focusing particularly on women. The center stands as a beacon of resilience and hope, offering not just training but also a pathway towards greater economic independence.
As SELINTAANBA looks to the future, Ms. Ouoba voiced her eagerness to establish partnerships with both governmental and non-governmental organizations. This ambitious plan aims to extend training programs to schools, aligning with the national vision to support and empower women and youth.
In a transforming landscape, initiatives like these serve as vital components to building sustainable livelihoods and enriching communities. The SELINTAANBA vocational training center exemplifies how dedication, skill sharing, and community support can weave a better future for women in Burkina Faso.
