Empowering Adult Learners: A Conference to Transform Education Programs!

Advancements in Adult Education: A Bright Future for Learning in Eritrea

On December 23 and 24, a groundbreaking conference took place in Asmara, Eritrea, aimed at enhancing and expanding adult education programs across the Central Region. This important event saw the participation of regional leaders, sub-zone administrators, and partner organizations, all collaborating to address and improve the educational landscape for adults in the region.

The conference featured comprehensive presentations that documented the progress and achievements of the adult education initiative from 2000 to 2015. Among the significant contributors were officials from the education offices of the sub-zones of Serejeka, Gala-Nefhi, and Dirfo, all sharing insights into their regions’ advancements. Mr. Gilazgi Berhe, a key presenter, emphasized that a pivotal 2008 study by the Ministry of Education revealed that over 87% of the adult education program had been successfully implemented, with improvements boosting that figure to a remarkable 95% between 2009 and 2015.

Evidently, the commitment to eradicating illiteracy is a collective responsibility. Mr. Belai Habtegabir, the head of the education office in the Central Region, called on administrators at every level to ramp up their involvement in this crucial endeavor. His remarks highlighted a shared dedication to fostering a literate and informed populace.

Mr. Tikuabo Aimut, who leads curriculum planning and development at the Ministry of Education, noted that the conference had a dual purpose: to review the current state of adult education and to strategize a five-year action plan that prioritizes future developments. This proactive approach aims to tailor educational programs to better serve the learning needs of adults in Eritrea.

Adding to the excitement, Mr. Gebrezgi Dmam, Director General of Adult Education Program and Media, revealed plans for a variety of training initiatives designed to bolster existing programs. These efforts signal a bright future for adult education in Eritrea, ensuring that lifelong learning is within reach for all.

As Eritrea continues its commitment to enhancing educational opportunities, events like this conference underscore the value placed on learning and growth in every community. The dedication shown by both leaders and local administrators bodes well for the advancement of adult education in the country.
