Suez Canal Celebrates Successful Transit of Mega Container Ships, Reinforcing Its Strategic Importance for Global Trade

In a remarkable demonstration of its operational capabilities, the Suez Canal achieved yet another milestone on Saturday by successfully facilitating the passage of two colossal container ships. This significant event underscores the canal’s readiness to accommodate some of the world’s largest vessels, as maritime conditions in the Red Sea continue to improve.
Lt. Gen. Osama Rabie, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), expressed pride in the canal’s ability to maintain top-tier safety standards and provide world-class navigation services to shipping lines from across the globe. His comments came during an inspection of the CMA CGM JULES VERNE, a flagship vessel from the renowned French shipping group, as it journeyed northbound from Singapore to Lebanon.
This marked the CMA CGM JULES VERNE's first south-to-north transit through the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait this year, contributing to its third crossing of the Suez Canal in 2025, following successful transits in June and September. Spanning an impressive length of 396 meters and a width of 53.6 meters, this behemoth ship boasts a massive total tonnage of 176,000 tons and operates with a draft of 11.5 meters.
During the transit, Rabie engaged with the ship’s crew, discussing the quality of navigational support provided along the routes through the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb, and into the Suez Canal. Notable representatives from CMA CGM in Egypt were also present, including Tarek Zaghloul, CEO for Egypt and Sudan, and Amr El-Shafei, Operations Director.
Adding to the Suez Canal’s success, the CMA CGM HELIUM also transited the canal for the first time, heading southbound from Singapore to Alexandria Port. This vessel is 335 meters long, 51 meters wide, with a draft of 9.5 meters and a total capacity of 130,000 tons—a powerful addition contributing to the canal’s significant traffic.
Rabie emphasized the stringent safety protocols in place, designed to ensure the secure passage of all vessels. This includes the deployment of experienced maritime pilots, escort tugboats, and real-time tracking through guidance stations and central traffic control.
Highlighting the “strategic partnership” between the Suez Canal and CMA CGM, Rabie noted that the company’s ongoing commitment to traverse the canal, even amidst the challenges presented in the Red Sea, speaks to their confidence in this vital waterway. The recent Sharm El-Sheikh Summit further encouraged CMA CGM to navigate their large container ships along the Suez route, culminating in Saturday’s impressive double transit.
With a total of 38 vessels transiting the Suez Canal on that day, accounting for a net tonnage of 1.7 million tons, it’s clear that the canal remains an indispensable maritime corridor on the global stage. As stability returns to the Red Sea, global shipping lines are expected to reconsider their routes, potentially leading to a resurgence in container traffic through the Suez Canal.
As the world navigates a complicated economic landscape, the significance of the Suez Canal is more critical than ever, serving as a focal point in international trade and logistics.
