In a significant move aimed at enhancing civic participation, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced that Wednesday, November 26, 2025, will be a public holiday in Namibia. This declaration is designed to encourage all Namibians to engage in the upcoming regional council and local authority elections.
Making this announcement under the Public Holidays Act of 1990, the President highlighted the importance of this civic duty as part of the nation’s democratic process. This initiative showcases Namibia’s commitment to empowering its citizens to take part in shaping their communities and influencing local governance. It follows the earlier Proclamation No. 37 issued on September 26, 2025, which set the date for the national polls, underscoring the government’s dedication to a transparent electoral process.
Moreover, in a move to ensure the smooth execution of these elections, President Nandi-Ndaitwah has made key amendments to the list of returning officers, which are essential for overseeing the polling process. This adjustment, also part of Proclamation No. 37, comes under the Electoral Act of 2014 and reflects a proactive approach to electoral management.
Notably, in the Regional Council Elections:
- In Musese Constituency, Kavango West, Kanyetu Vilho Likuwa will step in as the new returning officer, replacing Pessa Martin T.
- For the Otavi Constituency in Otjozondjupa, the returning officer will now be Himeezembi Uanivi, taking over from Onesmus Laimi.
In the Local Authority Elections, some key changes include:
- Rundu Local Authority in Kavango East will see Kankara David replacing Santos Mario as the returning officer.
- In Ruacana Local Authority, Omusati, Petrus Susan will assume the role, stepping in for Iiyambo David Shikongo.
These adjustments aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the electoral process, ensuring that the upcoming elections are fair, free, and represent the voices of the constituents accurately. With the declared public holiday, Namibians are encouraged to utilize this opportunity and participate fully in shaping their government.
As we look forward to this important day in November, it’s clear that the government is making strides to promote an inclusive and participatory democracy in Namibia. Stay tuned for further updates as election day approaches!
