Egypt Takes Bold Steps Towards a Renewable Future: Major Solar Projects Announced
In an exciting development for Egypt’s renewable energy landscape, the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy has partnered with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company to launch two groundbreaking solar power projects. This initiative is poised to significantly reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels while enhancing grid stability through innovative storage technologies. The announcement, framed as a leap forward in Egypt’s clean energy ambitions, has garnered attention across the continent.
The collaborations also highlight the involvement of Hassan Allam Utilities Energy Platform, a prominent investment institution, and Infinity Power, a renowned African renewable energy company. Both partners are set to revolutionize the energy sector in Egypt, reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable practices.
Under the newly signed agreements, the consortium will spearhead the construction of a 200 MW solar power plant in Benban—home to one of the largest solar parks in the world. This facility is expected to become operational in the third quarter of 2026 and will feature a connected battery storage capacity of 120 MWh. Furthermore, the project will include a massive 1,000 MW solar array in Minya, equipped with 600 MWh of storage, slated to be operational by the third quarter of 2027.
These ambitious projects cumulatively represent a whopping 1,200 MW of solar power with 720 MWh of storage capacity, marking a significant step toward Egypt’s goal of increasing the share of renewables to 42% of the overall energy mix by 2030, and an impressive 65% by 2040. This endeavor not only solidifies Egypt’s status as a regional leader in clean energy but also positions the nation as a pivotal player in the global transition towards sustainable development.
Omar Hosny, the vice president of energy and water at Hassan Allam Utilities, praised the agreement as a significant milestone in Egypt’s energy transition. He remarked, “Through our partnership with the Ministry of Electricity and Infinity Power, we are advancing projects that diversify the energy mix, enhance grid resilience, and lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.”
Adding to the dialogue, Ahmed Mulla, deputy CEO of Infinity Power, emphasized the importance of these solutions in driving Egypt’s clean energy transformation and expanding access to renewable energy across Africa. “We continue to build on our portfolio by delivering advanced solar, storage, and grid technologies that bolster the country’s energy security and promote long-term sustainability,” he stated.
As these projects commence, they signal a promising trajectory for Egypt’s energy sector and underline the commitment of African nations to harness renewable resources for a brighter, more sustainable future.
