“Reviving Commitment: Reengaging in Global Peacekeeping Efforts”

Solomon Islands Aims to Revitalize UN Peacekeeping Efforts

In an exciting development for the Solomon Islands, the government has announced plans to reactivate the deployment of police officers to international peacekeeping missions under the auspices of the United Nations. This initiative harks back to previous deployments from 2016 to 2018, when brave officers from the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) participated in peacekeeping efforts in Darfur, Sudan.

During a recent press conference in Honiara, Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, confirming the government’s aspirations to revive the program if the UN extends the opportunity. “We would like to reactivate that if the UN could give us that opportunity so we can send some of our policemen and women to take part in peacekeeping operations,” he stated. The Prime Minister emphasized that there are numerous locations where UN peacekeeping missions are currently underway, and the Solomon Islands is eager to contribute.

The commitment to send officers for international peacekeeping not only represents a chance for global engagement but also enhances the professional development of the officers involved. PM Manele articulated that the Ministry of Police, alongside the Commissioner of Police, would carefully evaluate candidates to ensure they meet the necessary skills and requirements for selection.

Moreover, the Prime Minister raised an important point regarding the representation of Solomon Islanders within the UN. He has formally requested that qualified citizens be permitted to take the UN Secretariat recruitment exam in Honiara, as the present requirement for overseas testing poses a significant barrier. Currently, only two Solomon Islanders are working at the UN office in Geneva, with no representation at the UN Secretariat in New York.

This initiative holds promise not only for the officers who will gain invaluable experience and exposure but also for the broader economic benefits that could arise from their participation in international missions. By contributing to important global efforts, the Solomon Islands showcases its commitment to peace and stability while simultaneously fostering local growth and development.

As the nation looks forward to the possibility of rejoining the ranks of international peacekeepers, it highlights the Solomon Islands’ dedication to fostering peace and security around the world.
