Exciting Developments in Nigeria: Six New States Proposed in Constitutional Review

In a significant move for Nigeria’s governance, the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitutional Review has officially approved the creation of six new states. This decision, which promises to reshape the political landscape, was reached during a two-day retreat held in Lagos, co-chaired by Senator Barau I. Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, and Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The committee’s retreat was extensive, encompassing a review of no less than 69 bills alongside 55 requests for state creation, two boundary adjustment proposals, and a staggering 278 requests for new local governments. The deliberations led to a unanimous agreement to increase the number of states from the current 36 to 42, a move aimed at enhancing governance and representation across the country’s diverse regions.

The proposed initiative outlines the creation of one additional state from each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones: North-West, North-East, North-Central, South-West, South-South, and South-East. This structure will enable the South-South and South-West regions to each have seven states, the South-East to have six, while the North-West, North-East, and North-Central will each have seven.

As part of this process, a dedicated subcommittee has been formed to meticulously identify the areas from which these new states will emerge. Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, the Chief Whip of the Senate, will lead this subcommittee, ensuring a fair and thorough assessment of the 55 requests submitted to the National Assembly. With a commitment to equitable representation, the committee aims to address the aspirations of all state creation advocates and stakeholders involved.

This monumental resolution will be included in a comprehensive report slated for presentation to both chambers of the National Assembly in the first week of November. It marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey toward a more inclusive governance structure, with hopes of fostering unity and addressing regional disparities.

As Nigeria stands on the brink of change, this development is rekindling discussions about the nation’s future and the potential benefits of increased state autonomy. The enthusiasm from various communities indicates a collective belief that these new states may provide a stronger platform for local governance and development, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians across the board.

With this democratic process in motion, many are watching eagerly to see how these changes will unfold and what they will mean for Nigeria’s future. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story from Africazine.
