Petrobras Greenlights Innovative Carbon Capture Pilot at Saline Reservoir

In an exciting development for Brazil’s energy sector, Petrobras, the country’s national oil giant, has kickstarted an innovative initiative aimed at carbon capture and storage (CCS). Launching its São Tomé CCS Pilot Project in Macaé, Rio de Janeiro, this marks a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to tackle climate change, pledging to capture and store an impressive 100,000 tonnes of CO2 each year in a saline reservoir.

This ambitious project will be closely supervised by Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and the State Institute of Environment (INEA). It’s all part of Petrobras’s broader strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2050. The company’s proactive approach to sustainability demonstrates a commitment to blending innovative technology with environmental responsibility.

Angélica Laureano, the director of energy transition and sustainability at Petrobras, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “The company’s tradition of employing cutting-edge technology for major offshore ventures is now being brought to the forefront of our decarbonisation efforts. This project is a concrete step towards developing effective climate solutions.” She indicated that this pilot represents a pioneering move in the integration of carbon capture in Brazil’s energy landscape.

The São Tomé CCS pilot is set to operate for three years, starting in 2028. It will involve capturing CO2 emissions and injecting them into a deep saline reservoir located at Barra do Furado, Quissamã. This strategic experiment will not only validate procedures for carbon capture but also pave the way for future commercial CCS initiatives, whether they are onshore or offshore.

Renata Baruzzi, director of engineering technology and innovation, explained how this project serves as a vital research and development initiative. “The São Tomé CCS Pilot Project is designed to test and validate the fundamental technologies and methodologies for deploying large-scale carbon capture and storage hubs in Brazil,” she said, showcasing the potential for real-world applications in the future.

As nations globally pivot towards sustainability and climate-resilient technologies, Brazil’s proactive steps in carbon capture mark a positive trend and demonstrate the country’s capability in embracing innovative environmental solutions. Stay tuned for more updates on this ground-breaking initiative and its implications for Brazil’s energy and environmental future.
